We the Weeds, 48”x48”, plaster, walnut ink, acrylic, oil and cold wax on birch panel. I started it in 2020 in the dark times of Covid, after the murder of George Floyd and during the rise of Black Lives Matter, and finished in February of 2024. The definition of a weed is any plant growing out of place. This painting, which began in isolation and despair over the state of the world, made way for questioning how in truth, we do belong to each other.

We immigrate from one source to another, some against our will, landing unwelcome yet intrinsically becoming part of the landscape. In this awkward planting also bloom sources of connection—coexisting, sharing the same air, seeking nutrients from often degraded resources, enduring what the elements unleash upon us, thriving, dying, throwing down roots, cross pollinating and creating seeds of invention just to survive. These things we share.
